Proportional reasoning is the ability to understand situations of comparison. In the real world, this is a major aspect of many day-to -day tasks. For example, estimating the better buy; interpreting scale and maps; making the perfect cup of coffee, requires proportional reasoning.
Proportional reasoning is a key aspect of numeracy yet it is a hidden theme in school curriculum and often limited to the study of rate and ratio in mathematics only. Numeracy for the 21st Century requires more than skills and facts. It is well-recognised that numeracy is applying knowledge as required in everyday life and in relation to the school curriculum, each learning area has its own unique numeracy demands.
The focus of this conference is on promoting proportional reasoning, a fundamental but elusive cornerstone of numeracy. This conference provides leading research, conducted in Australian schools, on promoting cross-curricular approaches to promoting proportional reasoning. It presents research data on students’ proportional reasoning and the impact of explicit teaching upon change and growth of proportional reasoning capability. Hands-on, classroom tested learning and assessment activities will be a feature of this conference. Research has shown that explicit teaching accelerates the development of students’ proportional reasoning skills.
